The corrugated industry utilizes rolls in numerous functions including feeding, squeezing, coating and printing. Each of these applications has their unique parameters that must be met. These include heat and chemical resistance, release, hardness and modulus. An effective roll covering must possess characteristics which match the requirements of the specific application. Roll coverings for corrugated applications typically must exhibit high coefficient of friction properties, abrasion, heat and ozone resistance.
Typically, rollers are covered with elastomeric compositions to allow the creation of a uniform pressure zone called a "NIP". To insure the nip region remains constant, the properties of the roll covering must be stable and not degrade with use. The selection of the roll covering must take into account the physical properties of the covering originally (i.e., static) as well as physical properties of the covering in use (i.e., dynamic). An effective covering must not change appreciably in use, as determined largely by the environment e.g. solvent and chemical exposure, as well as the dynamic properties of the roll covering.
Improving the performance of end-use roll applications is essential in most industries today. We invite you to take a look at the product line Valley Roller Company has assembled for use in the Corrugated Industry. We are confident these coverings will improve roll performance and help our customers achieve their goals for improved productivity.
Flexographic Printing
Rubber Coverings are used for the Flexo Fountain and Nip rollers. The selection of rubber coverings is the key to their respective performance in use. Chemical resistance is the most basic property for rubber compositions used in flexo. The flexo industry as a whole uses a broad range of inks. These inks contain various solvents and chemicals that are used to control the viscosity. The basic chemistry in corrugated Flexo Rollers is most typically Water Based Inks. All elastomers have their own specific chemical structure that largely determines their suitability to a given ink. If a rubber composition is used in a non-compatible ink, the optimum print quality is never achieved, due to swelling and loss of hardness. We have developed Val-Rite™ coverings specifically for corrugated applications. These coverings are formulated to enhance ink affinity, abrasion resistance, cut and ozone resistance.
Valley Roller Company has a variety of coverings specifically designed for all types of rubber rolls used in the corrugated industry. Please contact your Valley Roller representative for assistance.
